IMWS have set up a group to help graduates find employment in the career they have studied for. Graduates are finding it increasingly more difficult to get on to the employment ladder. The volunteer Career Support Group will aim to support individuals with securing their first job.
The group will aim to provide advice and guidance on various aspects that could be helpful to recent graduates.
Talking about the group IMWS Chair, Dr Imtiyaz Patel, who himself is a dentist said, “You may find that you are eager to find employment but you’re having difficulties securing that dream job. We are a group of individuals that have many years of experience working in different fields such as the NHS, engineering, teaching, pharmaceuticals to mention some”.
The service has been set up because of feedback from the community stating how competitive it is to secure a good job. This is not surprising given the recent austerity measures that many companies have implemented to reduce the size of their workforce.
“We are aware that there isn’t a similar service available in Batley, Dewsbury and the surrounding areas currently.” Dr Imtiyaz added.”Our intention is to help you secure the desired job and our career services are completely free.”
Some of the services on offer include:
- Career coaching
- CV preparation, tips and advice
- Interview preparation, feedback and advice
- Professional skills such as presentational skills, role-plays and group exercises.
The group hopes to achieve this by offering one-to-one services (mentorship), workshops ran over half a day at Al-Hikmah Centre and hosting panel discussions with professionals from different industries.
The group is only a start and Dr Imtiyaz said he would like to see more people join. “We are always looking for volunteers to share their experiences with recent graduates. If you work or have worked in professional industries and feel like you can make a difference, please get in touch.”
